First Lady attended baptism
In 1956, former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt came to St. Paul's Episcopal Church to attend the baptism of Hall Randolph Walker, the 4-month-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald C. Walker. Roosevelt was Mrs. Walker's aunt and the child's godmother. HERALD PHOTO

Beth Israel Synagogue was built in 1925 at Broadway and Irving Street. Beth Israel is still in the building, but plans are under way to build a new synagogue on east Samish Hill. WHATCOM MUSEUM OF HISTORY & ART
