The full results of this year’s problematic Ski to Sea Race could be available by today, according to race director Pete Coy.

Questions about which team came in first, second and third in Sunday’s race arose after the cancellation of the canoe leg caused a computer glitch in Everson, Coy said. The glitch led to a time error in Ferndale and caused Clippercanoes. com’s mountain biker to be released early, he said.

Clippercanoes.com’s kayaker, Ian Mackenzie, crossed the finish line first, but the team came in third overall.

When the data from the time chips was verified, The Bagelry was named the first-place team, and Barron Heating came in second.

This was the first year Milliseconds Sports Timing of Spokane handled the timing duties for Ski to Sea.

“Milliseconds did a very good job,” Coy said. “We threw them a curveball by canceling the canoe leg.”

To electronically record their time from their timing chips, racers were instructed to lean down as they passed through well-marked timing chutes.

Volunteers were in place to record times by hand and to flag down any racers who failed to record their time electronically, Coy said.

It is unknown if Milliseconds will handle the timing duties for next year’s Ski to Sea, but Coy said he was satisfied with the job and may renegotiate the contract for 2009.

“Every year there are problems with timing, especially when you cancel a leg,” Coy said. “It created some problems. But we have the corrected times, and everyone will be satisfied with the results.”
