The ability to communicate with participants about what’s going on with the Ski to Sea race has changed in the past 12 months.
SkitoSea.com, the official Web site for the annual race, has been updated since the 2007 race. All of these updates are aimed at helping racers and spectators have a more enjoyable and safer race.
In the past, once a team was registered, it often had no need to revisit the website, since the information often remained static.
In 2008, the website is more of a useful tool, allowing visitors to get a “feel” for Ski to Sea.
Here is a look at some of the improvements made to the Website:
-About Ski to Sea: Ski to Sea, in its present form, grew out of the 1911 Mt. Baker Marathon.
Read about the 1911 race, which was the biggest event of its kind on the West Coast.
-Community Forum: Now, racers and teams can find each other by using the Ski to Sea Community Forum. The forum is a bulletin board that allows the public to post messages. If your team needs a racer or a racer needs to join a team, check out the Community Forum.
Nooksack River flow rates can be found in the canoe section of the forum.
-Bellingham Herald stories: The Bellingham Herald has been running a series of stories on Ski to Sea since January. Read about the unique characteristics of this race as provided by the volunteers, racers, and organizers.
-Event schedule: The Ski to Sea Festival consists of many events during the weeks of May 15-25. Check out everything from an Art Show, a Book Sale, Motorcycles, and an Antique Auto Show.
-Green Team: New for 2008 is the Ski to Sea Green Team. Read about our efforts to make Ski to Sea a more sustainable event with less impact on the environment.
-Map of race course in google: The Ski to Sea race course is tracked in Google maps, allowing you a bird’s eye view of the race course from the Mt. Baker Ski Area to the Marine Park finish line. You can zoom in to obtain the best spectator viewing areas for any leg of the race.
-News alerts: Ski to Sea News Alerts are sent out monthly to all racers in 2007 and 2008.
These news alerts keep you up-to-date with the rules and changes made to the Race. An archive of news alerts is provided, as well as a way to sign up for future monthly issues.
- Photos: Jon Brunk is back as the official Ski to Sea photographer. Visit the photos to see the Ski to Sea Hall of Fame shots; a sampling of the most animated racers as seen through the lens of the photographer over the years.
- Race Committee: Ski to Sea owes much of its success to the Race Committee. This committee gives hundreds of volunteer hours each year in order to make the race a great event for racers, spectators, and families.
- Race registration: We’ve gone completely online this year with registration for the race, including the hold harmless forms, which will be emailed to all racers at the end of April.
- Race results: Want to know who were the top finishers in the race in the late 1970’s? Did you know who was in the race in 1912? This list provides you with the names of top finishers, from 1911 through last year’s race.
- Regional relay races in the Northwest: All of the racers in Ski to Sea have usually been involved in other Northwest relay races. Get a complete picture of the Northwest regional races and the dates they take place.
- Team names for 2008 S2S racers: Each day, this list is updated to provide the names of the teams that have been “Accepted” for the 2008 race. If you don’t see you team in this list (and you think it should be), call the Bellingham Chamber of Commerce at 360-734-1330.
- Online videos of 2007 race: In 2007, Comcast provided streaming videos that depict each leg of the race. For all new participants, you can get a taste of what you’re in for while eating your potato chips, (sorry), while working out on your treadmill.
- Volunteers: There is an online form that you can fill out if you’re interested in volunteering for Whatcom County community event.
- YouTube Video Contest: We are holding a YouTube video contest that will allow anyone with a camera to be part of the race. Winners will be announced in mid to late June.
The result of all of these changes to the Ski to Sea website is that the hits have gone from about 2,000 per month to more than 20,000 per month.
