Robin Robertson is a 14-year veteran of Ski to Sea, having ridden the mountain bike and road ride legs of the annual mountain-to-sea relay during those years.

Now, the longtime bicyclist is launching “Ski to Sea Cycling Prep” in Bellingham to share what she’s learned along the way with race newbies and old pros alike. The classes run on eight Monday nights from March 31 to May 19.

“I want people to be able to enjoy the Ski to Sea race even more,” says Robertson, owner of Bellingham Tennis Club.

The 1˝-hour classes will be indoor at the club, 800 McKenzie Ave. Participants may use the club’s LeMond or CycleOps stationary bikes or bring their own bikes and ride them on Kurt Kinetic Fluid Trainers.

Robertson, who also is a member of the Fanatik Road Racing Team, will teach the classes. She’ll improve riders’ endurance and strength, as well as teach drafting and pedaling techniques.

“It’s not just pushing down on the pedals,” she says, noting there are four parts to each pedal stroke.

Learning how to pedal, as well as how to ride hills and flat parts, are all part of “being able to ride stronger without that much more effort,” she says.

Because she’s ridden the race courses so many times, Robertson says she’ll also help participants learn how to ride the routes and what to expect come race day.

Ski to Sea, an 85-mile race from Mt. Baker Ski Area to Bellingham Bay, is on May 25 this year.

Classes cost $126 for club members and $140 for non-members. The first session, at 7 p.m. on Monday, March 31, is free.

The deadline to register for all classes is March 31.
