Muslim life in Whatcom County

Monem Salam

Ask Monem and Iman Salam questions about their Islam religion and about their lives as Muslims in Whatcom County. They moved to Bellingham five years ago. The parents of three children, Monem is a financial manager and Iman is a homemaker. Their family is the focus of a new one-hour documentary, “On a Wing and a Prayer: An American Muslim Learns to Fly,” made by a Bellingham company, Hand Crank Films. More than an account of Monem’s effort to obtain his private pilot’s license, the movie explores the life of a modern Muslim family in small-town America.

Q: This is not a question, but a compliment. I have felt so saddened at the backlash in the US against Muslims and people who look "arab". We have Indian and Bahai friends from Iran who definitely feel less safe since 9-11. Some have seen fit to fly the US flag or put on a patriotic bumper sticker so they might not be profiled. They have encountered ignorant people who have said hurtful things to them. We also know several Pakistani business owners who also fly the flag -- not, I think out of patriotism but out of feeling vulnerable. By your being willing to have a forum where people can ask you questions about your religion -- it will, in some, dispel fear and prejudice. I commend you for doing that. You are really doing a service to the people of Whatcom County.

A: Hi Jill, thank you for your comments. I do feel honored to live in Bellingham and have have been further honored by the outpouring of encouragement and support for this film. I pray it be a bridge for the understanding of cultures.

Q: Lots of Whatcom County families go to Canada frequently. Does your family make day trips up to BC, or cross the border frequently? If so, what is your border crossing experience like? Do you feel that you are treated differently because your family is Muslim? Is there a difference you notice between Canadian and US Border Guards? Thanks!

A: Hi Elliott, thanks for you question. As you may know, we have been living in this area for 5 years now and have made several trips across the border, and many of them have been day trips. Over all it is has been a good experience, with some exceptions. I will say however, that we have no problems going as a family, but if I travel with friends, or alone, I have always been stopped for more questioning. Definitely the Canadian border is much easier than the US and speaks well to a saying that "America doesn't care if you leave, just when you come back!!!!" But to give you a sample of what Muslims go through, about a couple of months ago, a friend and his family were visiting so we decided to go to Surrey to get something to eat. On our return, it was 9:00pm when we reached the border, all 8 of us, including 4 kids all under 8 yrs. old. Well, they made us go inside for more checks, and 3 hours later, and well after 12 am, they let us go. I must say here that Border officers were great. For the kids, they provided games, snacks, and did whatever they could to ease the situation. But the situation was what it was. When we ask why it took so long, the answer was that my friend's last name matched a "suspected" terrorist. Suffice it to say that he had a very common Muslim last name, similar to "Smith" so we asked the Border Guards if they stopped everyone with that last name, and since it so common, that must be a lot of people. The answer: yes we do!!! I can understand that we, as Americans, have to keep our borders secure, but imagine stopping and questioning everyone with the last name of "Smith", because there is one terrorist out there in the world with the same last name. Seems a bit ridiculous.

Q: Monem and Iman, thanks for your willingness to participate in this forum about Islam and about what it's like to be a Muslim in a small city like Bellingham. For openers, could you discuss why you think there's a need and a value to doing this?

A: Hi Dean, It is an honor to be on the forum and I am so glad the Herald is hosting this. There are a lot of misconceptions about Islam and Muslims, including American Muslims. It is much better to voice concerns and have them addressed rather than let them fester inside of oneself. Neither Iman nor I claim to have all the answers, who does!!! but this forum, like the movie, "On A Wing And A Prayer" is an attempt to be as open and honest as possible when it comes to our lives as American Muslims in Bellingham.
