This route offers a spectacular view and a great workout within a relatively short distance.
A great excuse for an autumn drive down Chuckanut Drive, you'll embark from the Clayton Beach parking lot. Head up Fragrance Lake Road by foot as the road is gated at the bottom.
As you climb upward, glimpses of Samish Bay can be seen part way up the initial ascent.
Look for the first gate on the right after approximately a half mile. Unmarked, this old logging road is now used as a trail.
The Burnout Trail is undulating and canopied by big trees. After traveling for one mile from the turnoff, the forest opens up, and you see an incredible panorama with the San Juans, the Olympics and Anacortes in the distance and tiny ships and ferries dotting the bay.
The view is enjoyed from a grassy clearing that sits at the edge of a cliff, so caution should be taken.
While most of the work is done on the 1 1/2 miles puffing up the hill, it is a quick and easy descent back down.
