Craig Cole's article made me feel warm and fuzzy -- like a used car salesman does. Unlike test driving the used car, for Gateway Pacific Terminal I have to pay federal tax subsidies to railroad barons and rich investors. I get 18 more train cars going through town past my home. A few more jobs? Remember the used car salesman! Tax revenues? C'mon, alternative fuels can yield far more revenue than coal. More energy? Sorry. Exported!
Gateway gets to market a cheap resource mined on public lands at dirt cheap prices at what I find an unbelievable profit and all subsidized by taxpayers. And the coal guys keep lowering the price to keep it fashionable. Oh, the gift that keeps on giving!
We get environmental degradation. Contrary to Craig Cole's assertion that Gateway will be environmentally sensitive, I believe we will get megatons of greenhouse gas emissions to warm the atmosphere, ocean acidification to dissolve marine animals, and gooey masses of coal dust particulates having unspeakable effects deposited along Puget Sound railroad lines. Add to that messed up weather patterns -- increased hurricanes - tornadoes - flash flooding - and drought attributed to uncontrolled fossil fuel usage.
It's time to put an end to the use of coal. Stop it now, forever. We can do our part locally by resisting in every way possible the development of a coal terminal.
