Some are taking President Obama to task for his foreign policy of "don't do stupid stuff." "DDSS" is simply shorthand for an important guiding principle expressed by British historian Sir Michael Howard, regarding consideration of intervention in distant civil wars: (1) Don't get involved in faraway civil conflicts. They are mean, dirty, brutal affairs, and everyone will hate you when it is over. (2) If you must enter the fray, pick a side. (3) If you do intervene, choose the side that will win - and make sure that it does. Don't do stupid stuff, is simplistic, but on the mark.
