I've worked at Intalco for over 36 years. It's been good for me and a great employer for our community. We're fortunate to have 3 industries paying high wages and providing a stable tax base for Whatcom County.
Decades of planning made Cherry Point an industrial zone, but some don't think we need industry and good jobs here. They think we should phase out companies who have been rock solid for years.
Some extremist groups are against industry, some funded by people and organizations outside our community, trying to block any business that has anything to do with industry. I think it's wrong to let outsiders decide how we should go forward as a community. Look carefully at people running for office who may share this anti-industry agenda. Examine candidates' positions to be sure those who may use land planning to eliminate existing or new industry are not elected.
My ancestors moved here in the 1860s for good jobs to support their families. Today many of our children and grandkids must leave to find good jobs, or stay and work for low wages. Let's not lose the opportunity to bring more good jobs back, plus a stronger tax base for our county's needs.
Many agree the naysayers have gone too far. Time to be sensible and support Gateway. I belive it will balance jobs and the environment and be a proud addition to the three industries that call Cherry Point home.
