I believe Whatcom County really needs the Gateway project. We need the jobs this project will bring, just like Intalco and the refineries brought many good, permanent, well-paying jobs to our community several years ago. It's hard to imagine what our area would be like without these good neighbors who pay taxes, support our local businesses, schools and charities. Gateway will join the big three as another good community citizen.
Our county plan stated it will put one more industrial pier at Cherry Point. A shipping terminal that will move coal, wheat, and other products to customers around the world will be an excellent addition to the area we have set aside just for this purpose, and help our state's economy.
The longer it takes to finally get this project approved means that it will cost more to build. It also means that more people here will have to leave to find jobs to support themselves and their families. We are studying this project to death: let's move forward and make it happen here. Let's not send the message to other prospective businesses hoping to settle in Whatcom County that we are closed for business. Let's support Gateway and get our people back to work.
