While I do not support Hamas, and I do believe in Israel's right to defend itself, I do not believe in the right to indiscriminately bomb civilian targets because of leafleting. Mistakes have and will be made. I believe Israel lacks the will to take out Hamas on the ground because they are unwilling to have their "Normandy" invasion fill their cemeteries like U.S. and British forces in WWII. In 1968, Jewish intellectual Yeshayahu Leibowitz (1903-1994) warned his countrymen in his essay "The Territories" that "the Arabs would be the working people and the Jews the administrators... The administration would suppress Arab insurgency on one hand and acquire Arab quislings (collaborators) on the other. There is also reason to believe the Israeli Defense Force... would, as a result of being transformed into an army of occupation, degenerate..." Liebowitz was award his nation's highest honor, the Israel Prize in 1993, but when he said Israeli troops should refuse orders, the outcry forced him to return the prize.
