Lately I have heard more and more people calling for open borders in the United States. What do they mean by open borders? Does it mean no visa or passport requirements to enter the U.S.? Would we do away with the border patrol and customs and immigration? Could anyone, anywhere in the world, board an airplane/boat or walk across the border and enter the U.S.? Would anyone be admitted no matter what their criminal background or terrorist connections?
I hear that it is only humane that we take in anyone who claims to be a refugee. What if a leader - like Castro in the 1980s - opens their prisons and mental institutions and sends those people to the U.S?. Would they qualify as refugees? I assume that open borders advocates figure if China and India can support over a billion people each, then so can the U.S. In that case, Whatcom County's population would be somewhere around 500,000. That would probably require another 125,000 housing units, plus many more schools, shopping centers, medical facilities, interstate highways (Route 9 as another I-405), etc. What about the environment? We already have issues over water usage. Guess it would be bye, bye to dairy farms, berry farms and green open spaces. And hello, to solid city, from Olympia to the border.
