It is said that on Aug. 4 the Bellingham City Council may vote on a measure stating they "oppose the ongoing violence in Gaza and the targeting of innocent civilians" and they are "alarmed by the disproportionate killing of Palestinians."
The language describing this measure indicates that its sponsors do not view Hamas, a recognized terrorist organization since 1997, as the instigator of the violence and civilian mistreatment in Gaza, and they do not consider the thousands of missiles launched into Israeli communities as "targeting of innocent civilians." It appears that these sponsors view Israel as the aggressor in this current conflict. I doubt this measure addresses the verifiable instructions from Hamas that Gazans should not vacate areas that the Israel Defense Forces have announced will be targeted for a strike, and that women and children should proudly give their lives as shields for Hamas terrorists. These orders not only violate international law, but they are the cause for the "disproportionate killing of Palestinians." It is also a violation of international law to store such weapons in schools or to use hospitals as missile launch sites.
Should the Bellingham City Council approve this measure this will send a clear message to the local Jewish community, many of the local Christian community, and local Israeli residents in particular, that they are unwelcome in Bellingham.
