We are very strong supporters of having the City of Bellingham start a public telecommunication franchise of its own. A public cable utility could provide affordable internet and cable to its citizens and local businesses that would have huge economic benefits to our community.
The city needs to actively promote a good public network on the most local level and bring its citizens together by means of this network. Imagine a network that ties in all the resources of Bellingham into one portal for easy, affordable access for all! It must also be actively promoted throughout the community in order for it to be truly beneficial. This type of telecommunications technology would give Bellingham one more competitive edge that would promote more business and commercial trade to the city. It would increase sales revenue for the city and provide greater economic stability from recessions like the one we experienced in 2008.
Any investment by the city to set up a cable network will only strengthen our community and local businesses' efforts. It will also create more jobs and improve our local economy by helping small businesses expand and grow.
