I am in shock and saddened by a report in The Herald last week about a man who pulled a gun and threatened to kill another man when he was asked not to be so careless when he opened his car door in the parking lot. The absurdity of this behavior is beyond my comprehension. But I believe it is precisely this attitude that the NRA seems to be promoting. The attitude that "I have the right to own a gun, carry a gun and use a gun to protect not only my life but my ego." While no one was killed or injured and the incident did not make national headlines, this display of power is irresponsible gun ownership. Citizens are demanding and many in our government are attempting to legislate responsible gun ownership only to have the powerful NRA-backed gun lobby fight it on every front. Perhaps it is time to pass the issue of responsible gun ownership back to the NRA and gun lobbyists and hold them accountable for the actions of all gun manufacturers, dealers and owners.
