On this beautiful July 4 in Bellingham we honor a day of our independence as a nation. Independence for whom we must ask? The high court, in its Supreme wisdom, I believe has once again chipped away at the freedom of women, and always by extension, our children.
The recent decision by the supremes have discriminated against women's right to contraception. Employers who have personal religious objections to contraception can deny their women employees coverage.
Who are these employers? Why is the high court who decides the law of the land ignoring the majority of its citizens, women, the right to decide when and how to bear children?
The Religious Freedom Restoration Act should not be applied on the basis of "sin."
This is not a Christian, Jewish, Muslim country. Rather we are a pluralistic society encouraging and guaranteeing religious freedom for all. We point our fingers at other cultures who deny their women freedom but we covertly and subtly are doing the same thing to our women drip by drip.
I believe this latest unconscionable decision by the Supreme Court is unjust, discriminatory, illogical, cruel, unpragmatic and harmful to us all. We women need to scream our heads off at our legislators who enhance these actions by their own callous rejection of women's rights.
