Did you feel the Earth move this morning? Probably not, but on any given day there are an average of 275 earthquakes detectable by humans.
To get ready for the inevitable “big one” that will some day strike the South Sound, area public schools are participating in The Great Washington ShakeOut today. At 10:17 a.m. this morning, Thurston County students will practice the drop, take cover and hold on sequence that experts advise.
The drill is not just for kids. Adults should also learn and practice the three-point-drill, and visit the shakeout.org website to find methods for staying safe in an earthquake that occurs while driving.
We all know that a devastating earthquake will eventually hit the Puget Sound area, which lies on the boundary of two major tectonic plates. We just don’t know when. Today is not too early to start preparing.
