Do you have something to say? If you were given a weekly newspaper column, what would you write about? What part of the South Sound community needs your voice?
The Olympian’s 2012 Board of Contributors is nearing the end of its 12-month term. That means we are looking for five or six local writers to form the 2013 board, taking turns writing a weekly column.
Each contributor will be required to write between eight and 10 columns during the year.
Next year’s writers will form the 10th Board of Contributors since its launch in 2004. The purpose behind publishing local writers is to bring fresh South Sound voices to the community conversation.
We are seeking people who have opinions and won’t be shy about sharing them with 180,300 readers in print and online. Your words and ideas will reach 60 percent of Thurston County residents.
Past columnists have received comments on their columns from all over the United States, and sometimes from people living in foreign countries.
The best contributors focus on local issues, or how local events play into the national and international context, and offer solutions to problems facing the community and the region. In the past, our community columnists have tackled everything from medical malpractice reform to domestic violence to just plain humorous personal experiences.
The Olympian will be selecting the 2013 Board of Contributors for the broadest and most diverse representation of our community from the applications we receive.
Are you a neighborhood activist, a student, a homemaker or a state worker? Do you have knowledge and/or passion for education, the environment, spiritual life or health care? Are you conservative, liberal or somewhere in the middle?
We want to hear from all of you.
The goal is to form a 2013 Board of Contributors that represents all walks of life and that will add to the richness and diversity of the South Sound Community.
We are inviting people to send us self-nominations today. There’s no form to fill out, just a simple application process.
Here’s how to apply:
• Send us a cover letter with information about your ethnic and educational background. Tell us why you want to write a newspaper column. Include any particular area of expertise or passion, your political philosophy and mention any writing experience.
• Provide two writing samples of no less than 600 words on current topics.
• Send your self-nomination letter and samples to: Board of Contributors, The Olympian, 111 Bethel St. NE, Olympia, WA 98506. Or you can send them electronically to: email@example.com, putting “Board of Contributors” into the subject line.
