BELLINGHAM -- One man was killed and another injured when their vehicles collided head-on near the Iowa Street exit of Interstate 5 on Saturday, July 4.
The collision occurred about 9:40 p.m. when the driver of a Nissan Sentra began heading north in the southbound lanes of the freeway and struck a Ford Ranger head-on, according to the Washington State Patrol.
The driver of the Nissan, Mateo S. Gaspar Alonzo, 22, of Bellingham was killed. The driver of the Ford, Jose A. Lopez Perez, 25, of Mount Vernon was injured and transported to St. Joseph Hospital. He was in stable condition Sunday, July 5.
Drugs or alcohol are suspected to be involved with the crash, according to the Washington State Patrol. Both drivers were wearing seat belts.
