A Mukilteo man has been sentenced to about 23 years in prison after he was convicted of raping his 11-year-old granddaughter, who lives in Lynden.
Whatcom County Superior Court Judge Charles Snyder sentenced Larry L. Grubb, 55, for seven counts of first-degree child rape, which occurred at the girl's parents' home during holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas from 2005 through 2007.
The girl told detectives with the Lynden Police Department that Grubb would place her on his lap and touch her inappropriately.
The touching was forceful enough to warrant the rape charge, Lynden Police Chief Jack Foster said.
Grubb was arrested and charged in August 2008. A jury convicted Grubb on April 23 following a 10-day trial in Snyder's court. He was sentenced June 15.
Grubb has past convictions of driving under the influence, hit-and-run, trespassing and disorderly conduct, but no felony convictions and no convictions since 1994, according to court records.
State guidelines provided Snyder a sentencing range between 240 and 318 months, and he sentenced Grubb to 280 months, according to court records.
The seriousness of Grubb's crimes, the number of convictions, the girl's age during the abuse and his past criminal history determined the length of the sentence, according to court records.
