Man arrested for allegedly attacking store clerk on Mount Baker Highway

A Bellingham man was arrested Saturday, Nov. 15, on suspicion of attacking a female convenience store clerk on the 5500 block of Mount Baker Highway.

Sheriff’s deputies were called to the convenience store after a witness reported hearing a woman scream from inside around 6:15 p.m., according to the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office. A female clerk inside the store also called 911, report-ing that a man had brandished a knife and tried to rape her.

According to the clerk, the man came into the store, ordered her to lock the doors and then forced her into a stock room where he assaulted her, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Afterward, the man fled the store.

Deputies found the man and the car he was driving, based on descriptions provided by the victim and witness, and arrested 36-year-old Michael Richard Campbell on the 4000 block of Mount Baker Highway around 6:30 p.m.

Campbell was booked into the Whatcom County Jail on suspicion of first-degree rape, first-degree kidnapping and first-degree assault, among other allegations.

The case in under investigation, and additional charges are expected to be filed, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
