A motorcyclist who died after crashing into a guardrail on northbound Interstate 5 near Lake Samish Sunday afternoon, Sept. 28, has been identified as Steven Lyle Vail, 48, of Lynden.

Vail's 1993 Harley Davidson motorcycle veered onto the shoulder and struck the rail about 5 p.m., according to the Washington State Patrol.

His passenger, Tabitha Mya Tubbs, 29, of Belfair, was taken to St. Joseph Hospital, according to Trooper Keith Leary. She was in satisfactory condition Monday afternoon, according to hospital staff.

Both Vail and Tubbs were wearing helmets.

Both lanes of northbound I-5 near milepost 244 were closed for about 45 minutes for investigation of the crash, Leary said. The cause has yet to be determined.
