Richard “Dick” McClure, age 80, passed away on May 28, 2007 at his home in Bellingham. He was born in Akron, Ohio on May 19, 1927 to Joseph Elmer McClure and Helen (Maurer) McClure. He is a descendent of James Andrew McClure, born 1660, County Donegal, Ireland. Dick McClure’s ancestors settled in Virginia and Tennessee. His mother’s family was from Pennsylvania. An elder sister, Jacqueline, preceded him in death.

Following high school graduation in 1945, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and served in the South Pacific at the end of World War II. Dick returned to Navy service during the Korean conflict. In 1949 he married Doris Frances York in Akron, where the couple raised three children. Dick worked for many years in the Summit County Auditor’s office, retiring early as Deputy Auditor in 1975 to move to Washington. Settling in Kitsap County, Dick had a second career at Land Title, retiring from there in 1990 to spend more time with their small business in antiques, both taking great enjoyment in traveling to shows around the West. After his wife’s death in 1994, Dick moved to Bellingham to be close to his two daughters. He enjoyed swing music, gambling, baseball, building model airplanes, and spending time with family. He is survived by his children Richard McClure, Jr., (Cheryl Mack) of Trout Lake, Washington, Jacqueline McClure (Mark Henderson), of Bellingham, and Jennifer Kurtz (Kevin) of Bellingham. Grandchildren include Kirian McClure, Travis Kurtz, Reed Henderson, and Lauren Kurtz. Friends and family are invited to an open house Friday, June 1, 4-7 p.m. 2600 Huron Street.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the many dedicated and caring health service professionals from Madrona Medical, St. Joseph’s Hospital, Mt. Baker Care Center, Whatcom Hospice, and Visiting Angels who have helped with his care over the past several years. Donations in his memory may be made to Whatcom Hospice, Bellingham Central Lions’ Club or the American Museum of Radio and Electricity.
