Pierce County Councilman Dick Muri has announced he’s running for the 9th District congressional seat held by Rep. Adam Smith, D-Tacoma.
Muri, R-Steilacoom, is the second Republican to announce plans to seek the seat next year. State Rep. Tom Campbell, R-Roy, also has announced his intention to run.
Muri, a retired Air Force lieutenant colonel, won his second term on the County Council in November. In announcing his candidacy for the congressional seat, he said he will advocate for a balanced budget amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
“Congress for too long has not had the internal mechanisms to say no to interest groups’ insatiable appetite for more taxes or, even worse, more borrowing to be paid later by future generations,” Muri said.
