BELLINGHAM - The third retail pot store in the city likely will open at "high noon" on Wednesday, Aug. 20, owner Justin West said.
When it does, Cascade Herb Co. also will be the third such store in all of Whatcom County.
"We are intending to open noon on Wednesday, barring unforeseen circumstances," said West, a Bellingham resident.
The 1,140-square-foot Bellingham store will be at 1240 E. Maple St., Suite 103. It will employ six people.
Cascade Herb will sell one strain of pot flowers, or buds, from BMF Washington out of Raymond, and four strains of pre-rolls, or joints, from Cannasol Farms Inc. out of Riverside.
Edibles will be coming soon.
As for prices, West said Monday that he was still finalizing them.
West, a botanist by training, noted that the store will combine his infatuation with plants with what he called a long-term vision.
"Cannabis is one amazing plant, one of many really," West said.
His hope is that the store becomes lucrative enough to help fund nonprofit research in the areas of agroecology and food systems sustainability.
"The larger vision is to hopefully have a sort of funding stream for, I would describe it as, pretty cutting-edge research," he said, adding that it is hard to get funding through traditional sources for such research.
He said the store will be a warm and inviting space with antique glass display cases and artwork.
"We've put a lot of thought into the design, layout and look of the store," West said.
As for how long supplies will last when the store opens, "I would so love to know the answer to that question," West said.
"How long it will last depends on how many people show up," he said, adding that the store likely will limit quantities per customer to "kind of share the wealth."
Meanwhile, the owner of Green Stop in Maple Falls, which had a tentative opening date of Monday, Aug. 18, said he was still trying to get pot at reasonable prices.
Marc Wilson said "it shouldn't be that much longer" for the opening of Green Stop at 7466 Mount Baker Highway.
Green Stop could be the first recreational marijuana store to open in Whatcom County outside of Bellingham.
Two other stores opened in Bellingham in July - Top Shelf Cannabis and 2020 Solutions.
