BELLINGHAM — A 14-year-old Bellingham boy stole a fire extinguisher by breaking a glass container at an apartment complex Saturday night, Nov. 2, because he “thought it would be cool to have,” according to police.
An apartment manager for the Regency Park Apartments on Fraser Street spotted the teen with the extinguisher in a green bag around 7:50 p.m., said Bellingham Police Sgt. Jason Monson.
The manager tried to stop the teen near the apartment complex playground, but he dropped the bag and took off running, Monson said.
Police found the lad around 9:30 p.m. in an alley on the 1300 block of Railroad Avenue, Monson said.
When police asked him why he took the extinguisher, he told them: "I thought it would be cool to have a fire extinguisher," according to a police report. After they were done talking to the teen, officers called his mom, who picked him up and took him home, Monson said.
The broken glass was worth about $11 and the extinguisher is worth $120, but was recovered, Monson said. A report will be referred to a juvenile court prosecutor.
