Randy Stegmeier, the police chief at Western Washington University for the past five years, ends his tenure this week to take a job as manager of security at Pike Place Market.
The Western Front ran this story today on Stegmeier's departure.
From the article:
"Bellingham is a jewel," Stegmeier said. "It is away from that crush and rush of the Seattle area." Stegmeier will take over as the [Pike Place Market Preservation and Development Authority's] security manager. He is not looking forward to the traffic in Seattle, but is ready for the move, he said.
The PDA is responsible for the management of nine acres of downtown Seattle, which includes more than 200 businesses and dozens of restaurants.
Stegmeier will manage the PDA's security operation and develop an emergency plan for the Market Historic District.
He'll be succeeded, for the time being, by Darin Rasmussen, the current assistant chief of University Police. Western Today, a university newsletter, gave a rundown of Rasmussen's C.V.
Rasmussen has a bachelor’s degree from Washington State University and graduated from Northwestern University’s School of Police Staff and Command in 2007. He has served as assistant chief at Western since 2012. Prior to that, he served with the Marysville Police Department for over 22 years, including as lieutenant, detective sergeant and accreditation manager. At the Marysville Police Department, Rasmussen's accomplishments included reorganizing the Marysville Volunteer Program to focus on crime prevention; developing and implementing a Burglary Strike Team; and collaborating with the Marysville Community Coalition, Marysville School District and city offices to present a series of community forums focused on safety and emergency preparedness. He also served as an adjunct faculty member for Everett Community College from 2001 through 2008, teaching subjects such as Professional Development, Police Patrol Operations and Criminal Investigations. He also has received numerous awards and recognitions.
Officials hope to hire a permanent chief sometime in the next year. The chief also serves as the director of public safety on campus.
