A regional bank new to Bellingham is literally supporting a local business within its office.
Umpqua Bank opened its first Bellingham retail branch earlier this week in the Cornerstone Building at 3102 Newmarket St. in Barkley Village. Dubbed a “Neighborhood Store” by company officials, Umpqua invites visitors to use the space. This includes being able to reserve a meeting area that has free Wi-Fi.
The bank also offers a Local Spotlight program, creating a pop-up local business within the bank that rotates on a regular basis. The first such pop-up in Bellingham for Umpqua is Bellingham-based Bramble Berry, which is launching a new subscription service called the Handmade Beauty Box. It will be in the bank until the end of March.
The subscription service delivers beauty and spa products. Boxes are for sale at the branch, and customers can sign up for monthly deliveries.
Bramble Berry owner Anne-Marie Faiola said the bank has been “over-the-top helpful” in terms of getting the pop-up business set up. Handmade Beauty Box recently completed a successful Kickstarter campaign that raised more that five times the original goal.
“They are trying to be an inclusive bank that is more about the community. That’s exciting to see,” Faiola said.
Bramble Berry was chosen because Umpqua considers it an amazing business, said Eve Callahan, senior vice president of communications for the bank. Since the Handmade Beauty Box had no physical retail area, the bank thought it could help her launch the business.
Other businesses will be selected based on being locally owned and their ties to the community, Callahan said. The selected business does not need to be a customer of Umpqua Bank.
Prior to opening this retail branch, Umpqua had commercial and home lending offices in Bellingham after acquiring Sterling Financial earlier this year.
The Barkley branch is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday. For details, call the branch at 360-937-0901 or visit umpquabank.com.
