Whatcom County residents have another option if they need to get to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.
Joel Kronenberg recently started SeaTac Direct, which offers nonstop shuttle service to the Seattle airport from Bellingham’s Best Western Lakeway Inn. The shuttle, which started in mid-October, currently schedules three round trips a day, but Kronenberg plans on adding more during the holidays.
While similar to the Airporter Shuttle in terms of getting people to and from the Seattle airport, the new company offers some differences. It’s a direct trip from Bellingham to the Seattle airport, which cuts down on the travel time. SeaTac Direct also carries fewer than 14 passengers on any one trip.
Kronenberg said he came up with the idea after learning from merchants and residents that trips appear to be increasing to the Seattle airport from here, whether it’s by shuttle, car or plane.
Never miss a local story.
“Our concept is to use smaller vehicles to get people there faster,” he said, estimating that they can get people to the airport in 1 hour and 45 minutes to 2 hours, depending on traffic.
The current scheduled runs leave the Best Western Lakeway Inn at 4 a.m., 9:45 a.m. and 3:15 p.m. Kronenberg expects the early run to be helpful for passengers on days when Bellingham-to-Seattle airplane flights are canceled or delayed due to bad weather.
Rates are $39 one way or $70 round trip, with discounts for seniors, military and children.
The company will operate under a 24-hour reservation system; if no customers make a reservation for a specific run, it will be canceled. Kronenberg said they will be flexible for late reservations if the shuttle run already has passengers. To make a reservation, call 360-733-3666. The company’s website, seatacdirect.com, can’t accept reservations yet but is under development, Kronenberg said. For now, the website offers information about the company and the runs.
