Bellingham Fire Department and Whatcom County Fire District 8, which serves the Marietta and Gooseberry Point areas, will host open houses at their stations Saturday, Oct. 11.
People can drop by their neighborhood station from 1 to 4 p.m. to take a tour, see the fire equipment and meet firefighters.
The event also will promote the proper use of smoke detectors and emphasize how the inexpensive devices frequently save lives.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, working smoke alarms cut the chance of dying in a fire in half. Meanwhile, almost two-thirds of home fire deaths occur in homes with no working smoke alarms.
