BELLINGHAM - People have through Thursday, Aug. 21, to secure their ducks for the annual Rubber Ducky Derby that benefits local nonprofit organizations.
Come Saturday, those ducks, numbered on the bottom, will be dropped off the Pickett Bridge into Whatcom Creek. The first one to bob its way across the finish line near the lagoon and fish hatchery by Maritime Heritage Park will win the $3,500 top prize for its owner. Other cash prizes also will be given.
The annual derby is just part of the festivities at the park from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Expect live music and food vendors, plus Industrial Credit Union is sponsoring a small-business fair for business owners to network and to tell people about their services and offerings. The duck drop is at 11 a.m., and the journey takes about an hour. Winners are announced at 2:30 p.m.
Get your ducks at any ICU branch. Cost is $5 a duck (in the form of a ticket) or five for $20. Over the years derby sponsor Whatcom County North Rotary Club has donated more than $725,000 to local projects.
Businesses interested in participating in the small-business fair should contact Dale Holt at 360-788-2865 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
