BELLINGHAM - A test of the city's sewers in the York neighborhood could cause smoke to enter homes through plumbing.
The tests will be conducted from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Aug. 4, to Friday, Aug. 8. The area to be tested is bordered by Ellis and Humboldt streets, and Whatcom Creek and Lakeway Drive. Each section of sewer pipe will be tested over a 15- to 20-minute period.
The smoke is nontoxic and won't stain, according to city officials. If it lingers in the home, then open windows and doors, and contact one of the crew members conducting the tests. Residents who might be affected have been notified.
The smoke tests are intended to show where rainwater is entering sewer lines.
