People can help students in need get ready to head back to school at the Opportunity Council's backpack and school supply drive Wednesday, Aug. 6.
A school bus will be parked in front of the nonprofit's office at 1111 Cornwall Ave., and donations will be accepted from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., with the goal of filling up the bus with supplies for local kids.
People also can donate during that time at Walmart, 4420 Meridian St.
Supplies and backpacks will be distributed through Opportunity Council case managers and school district homeless support coordinators to hundreds of elementary and high school students who are homeless or low-income. Some supplies are given to children in shelters and emergency housing as well.
Financial donations are used to purchase additional high-demand items, such as backpacks and USB drives, and to pay for school fees, transportation costs, extracurricular activities and other educational support for students who come from homeless families. Though Bellingham School District provides most of the supplies needed for its students, backpacks are needed for all grade levels, as well as some supplies for high schoolers.
For those who can't help fill the bus on Wednesday, contributions can be mailed to the Opportunity Council at P.O. Box 2134 Bellingham, WA 98227.
