FERNDALE - Wild Whatcom is offering a guided "New Moon Night Prowl" family field trip through the swampland of Tennant Lake from 8 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday, July 26.
The cost is $10 a person or $30 per family; kids 3 and younger get in free.
With the darkness of a new moon and the forecast for clear skies, participants should see an alpenglow sunset on Mount Baker and countless stars as night falls. Wild Whatcom guides will help participants listen for creatures such as beavers, and will point out the odor from "marsh gas" along the boardwalk trail.
Natural history discussions will focus on the sensory skills required to be a nocturnal creature. Registration is required at wildwhatcom.org or by calling 360-389-3414.
