BELLINGHAM - Be a trail-blazer next week with a guided walk along Squalicum Creek, part of a planned link between Cornwall Park and Sunset Pond.
Whatcom Parks and Recreation Foundation is sponsoring the free walk from 6-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 22, starting at the Cornwall Park picnic shelter near Birchwood Avenue and Meridian Street. Register online at wprfoundation.org or by calling 360-389-3803.
A city park planner will be on hand to discuss the project and how it will provide an important link in both the Nooksack Loop Trail and the Bay-to-Baker trail, said Heather Carter of the parks foundation. The route follows east past Bug Lake, along the abandoned railroad grade under Interstate 5 toward Sunset Pond.
Carter said the walk may be cut short by construction in the James Street Road area near Sunset Pond.
"Part of the trail is there," Carter said. "Beyond that, we'll be forging into new territory. We'll be following the planned route."
