After years of effort, the entire 1,600-acre core of forested Blanchard Mountain in Skagit County will be protected from logging after legislators passed the state capital budget. Efforts are underway to rename the Harriet Spanel Forest to honor the late legislator and Bellingham Democrat who was one of Blanchard’s greatest champions.

William Ralph Smith of Whatcom County is resentenced after pleading guilty to second-degree manslaughter on Tuesday, Jan. 16. Smith originally was found guilty of first-degree manslaughter by a jury after he fatally stabbed another man to death in 2015.
Built in 1929 for the Washington Egg and Poultry Cooperative Association, the Granary Building on Bellingham's downtown waterfront is being renovated by Harcourt Development into retail and office space.
