OVERVIEW

Ferndale marked its centennial in 2007 and there’s plenty going on as the city starts its second 100 years.

The city is growing steadily, topping 10,500 people in its centennial year, a 20 percent increase over the past seven years. A river plaza trail in the works will connect Vander Yacht Park and Main Street to Pioneer Park and the ConocoPhillips Sports Complex. Commercial and light-industrial growth has been vibrant, notably between Interstate 5 and the Nooksack River.

Civic strengths include the city’s public school system, the annual Old Settlers Picnic, and the nearby twin gems of Hovander Homestead Park and Tennant Lake Interpretive Center.

HISTORY

Pioneer Park began with the purchase of four acres in 1901, but it wasn’t until 1935, when the Foster house built in 1895 near Squalicum Lake was moved to the park, that the idea of relocating and preserving pioneer buildings at the park took hold.

Beach Elementary, Central Elementary, Custer Elementary, Eagleridge Elementary, Mountain View Elementary, Skyline Elementary, North Bellingham Elementary, Horizon Middle, Vista Middle, Ferndale High, Clearview High, Windward High, Timber Ridge High.

An elementary school will open just north of Ferndale in fall 2008.
