OVERVIEW

The Central Business District is undergoing rapid change, with more to come.

The area stretches from Squalicum Harbor to the downtown cultural district, featuring Mount Baker Theatre, the Whatcom Museum of History & Art, and the American Museum of Radio & Electricity.

The district includes 137 waterfront acres formerly occupied by Georgia-Pacific West Inc. Plans for the prime parcel are working their way through local government.

Meanwhile, downtown has blossomed with new apartment and condominium complexes.

For close-in fun, Maritime Heritage Park straddles Whatcom Creek, with its autumn salmon run, while Zuanich Point provides a bayside park.

HISTORY

What is now the main building of the Whatcom Museum of History & Art opened its doors in 1893 as the new city hall for the town of New Whatcom, created when Sehome and Whatcom consolidated two years earlier.
