OVERVIEW
Birchwood neighborhood boasts many large, deep lots that once were small farms on the edge of the city.
There’s variety, with single-family homes, apartment complexes, a private golf course, several parks, and access to Bellingham Bay. A variety of shops and restaurants line Northwest Avenue.
Squalicum Creek borders the neighborhood on the south. To the west, Little Squalicum Park offers exceptional beach access to the bay. Birchwood Park provides play space, with ball fields and trails at the adjacent Squalicum Creek Park in the early stages of development.
HISTORY
Bellingham Coal Mines operated from 1917 to the mid ’50s in the area of Birchwood Avenue east of Northwest Avenue, where Albertson’s Food & Drug is now located.
SCHOOLS
Birchwood Elementary, Shuksan Middle, Squalicum High, Bellingham Technical College.
Some students will attend Alderwood Elementary in fall 2009.
