BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- Forward Claire Morgan had assists on both Western Washington University goals as the Vikings defeated Central Washington University, 2-1, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer game Saturday, Oct. 4, at Orca Field on the Whatcom CC campus.
It was the fifth straight win for the Vikings, who are ranked No.11 in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America/NCAA Division II Coaches Poll. They improved to 8-2-0 overall and remain undefeated in conference play at 4-0-0.
Central fell to 5-4-2 overall and 2-3-0 in league play.
Western broke a scoreless tie with a goal in the 40th minute. A quick pass from Morgan off a free kick found Kelly Irving all alone in front of the goalmouth and she deposited the ball into the lower right corner.
In the 52nd minute, Morgan angled another free kick in front of the goal and Brynn Regan (Jr., Mercer Island) won the race to the ball, scoring from three yards out.
Central got its only goal in the 59th minute. Hillary Franks had a free kick from 20 yards, which rebounded back to her, and she put it in the lower right corner.
Morgan, who leads Western in both goals (6) and assists (5), paces GNAC scorers with 17 points. During one five-game stretch, she scored six goals, four of them game-winners.
