Jake Jaffe of Bellingham was named to the dean’s list for fall semester at The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. The son of Jeff and Vicki Jaffe, he attended Sehome High School.
Sacred Heart Church donated $1,918 to the Bellingham Food Bank’s “Milk Money” campaign to provide milk to need families.
Several Whatcom County youths were winners at the Junior Heifer Spring Fair Show held in Puyallup:
Bellingham: Tyler Eldred (Hereford), champion steer and champion steer showman; Lindsay Eldred (Hereford), reserve champion steer and champion pee-wee showman.
Ferndale: Kirsten VanZanten (Limousin) reserve champion heifer; Miranda VanZanten (Limousin) champion intermediate showman.
Blaine: Cody Bierlink (Limousin), reserve champion steer; Lance Bierlink (Limousin), reserve champion senior showman, reserve grand champion showman, and reserve champion bred & owned.
Hailey Harroun of Bellingham received a $2,000 Noble Foundation Scholarship and a $1,000 Joseph Fleming National Merit Scholarship at Oklahoma State University, in Stillwater. Harroun, an animal science major, is the daughter of Patrice Johnson and Steve Harroun.
Sandy Thomas, a history major from Bellingham, was named as a 2009 President’s Award Honoree at Washington State University.
U.S. Army Pfc. Matthew Haddox has graduated from the H-8 Tracked Vehicle Recovery Specialist Course at Fort Knox, Ky. He is the son of Tom Haddox of Bellingham.
The Opportunity Council’s board of directors announced this year’s Community Partner awards and elected new officers at its annual meeting. New board officers are: president, Judi Edwards; vice president, Stan Snapp; secretary, Ramona Menish; treasurer, Terry Greer; past president, Kim Schuster; and officer at large, John Manning. Community Partner awards were presented to Chester Shaw from Son Rise Property Management Co., Lummi Indian Business Council, Nooksack Indian Tribe, Stanwood Camano Resource Center, and Whatcom Educational Credit Union.
Several elementary and middle school teachers in Whatcom County have been selected for the North Cascades and Olympic Science Partnership Master Science Teacher Award, funded by the National Science Foundation. The teachers will receive an annual stipend of $10,000 for three years, and have access to up to $5,000 a year for travel to present at professional meetings, purchase instructional materials, or fund substitute teachers to provide limited release time for professional development to improve student learning.
The local winners: Larrabee Elementary teacher Lisa Conlon, Happy Valley Elementary teacher Mike D’Hondt, Northern Heights Elementary teachers John Livezey and Brooke Stanton, Shuksan Middle School teacher Brian MacNevin, Carl Cozier Elementary teacher Caren Pitsch and Whatcom Middle School teacher Chad Wertz. In addition, Fairhaven Middle School teacher Miguel Boriss and Sehome High teacher Steve Ruthford were chosen to work with NCOSP on geology and biology instructional material projects.
Several students in Bellingham’s Highly Capable Learners Program won awards at the Washington State Science Fair.
Two students won for the best projects at their grade level: Muhammad Umar Nadeem, a third-grader at Carl Cozier Elementary, and Elizabeth Friesen, a fifth-grader at Larrabee Elementary. Both won the Craig M. Lewis Memorial Award, including a $100 prize. Friesen also won the Discovery Youth Science Challenge, the Pacific Science Center Award and the Project Relating to Energy Award.
Nine other students also first-place awards: Ethan Flanagan, Lucy Sun, Nicholas Bourlier and Kevin Sun from Happy Valley; Ruby Watson from Wade King Elementary; Katrina Dank from Larrabee Elementary; Kira Smith from Birchwood Elementary; and Kenneth Brown and Brent Schroeter from Fairhaven Middle School.
Second-place winners were: Elsie Dank, Talia Sheinkopf, Jackson Perkins and Bekah Oviatt from Happy Valley; Tayson Pickering from Northern Heights; Christopher Anderson from Silver Beach Elementary; Katherine Cunningham and Liam Watts from Larrabee Elementary; Benjamin ‘Gus’ Danielson from Geneva Elementary; Harry Conover from Sunnyland Elementary; Sarah Welsh from Fairhaven Middle; and Tia Smith from Shuksan Middle.
Third-place winners were: Lucas Cunningham and Cameron McWilliams from Happy Valley Elementary; and Elizabeth Crandall and Emily Pittis from Fairhaven Middle.
Candice Alvarado of Squalicum High School and Evan Horner from Sehome High School won scholarships through the Washington Award for Vocational Excellence program. Alvarado received her scholarship for excelling in business; Horner won for his involvement in automotive engineering.
Western Washington University student Molly Mendelsohn, daughter of Darrel and Nancy Mendelsohn of Bellingham, received a $1,000 President’s Scholarship for the 2009-2010 academic year. An incoming freshman, she had a 3.93 gpa Squalicum High School.
Western Washington University student Alexander Cutler, son of Marc Cutler and Leslie Smith of Bellingham, received a $1,500 President’s Scholarship for the 2009-2010 academic year. An incoming freshman, he had a 3.79 gpa at Mount Baker Senior High School.
Kelly Hart has been appointed to the Washington State Arts Alliance board of directors. Hart is executive director of Allied Arts of Whatcom County. She will represent the alliance’s region that covers Whatcom, Skagit, Snohomish, Island and San Juan counties.
Bellingham Unitarian Fellowship is now one of more than 40 regional businesses buying 100 percent green power from Puget Sound Energy for its buildings. Other local 100 percent buyers are the city of Bellingham, Whatcom County, Western Washington University, Sanitary Service Co., Wildcatch, Mallard Ice Cream & Café, Kulshan Cycles, 2020 Engineering, Boccemon, and Festival Espresso.
