Whatcom County became eligible to receive 3,500 doses of the antiviral drug Tamiflu, which can treat swine flu, after the Center for Disease Control released a portion of its cache Monday, April 27.

No cases of swine flu have been confirmed in the county or Washington state.

The state will control dispensing the drugs, and county officials can ask the state for up to 3,500 doses, county spokesman Joe Bates said.

County and city of Bellingham emergency management officials were still deciding how to distribute Tamiflu doses if they‘re needed, said Andy Day, assistant fire chief with the Bellingham Fire Department.

“Those decisions haven’t been made yet,” Day said.
