Beginning to Read
"Creepy Crawly Critters and Other Halloween Tongue Twisters" by Nola Buck: "Slow sly snakes slither silently" in this "I Can Read" book. Truesdell's wild, colorful cartoons illustrate the playfully ghoulish one-liners about how "tricky trick-or-treaters try trading sticky treats." Ages 6- 7.
"Minnie and Moo The Night of the Living Bed" by Denys Cazet: Minnie's barnyard friends find a way to make her feel better when a bad dream upsets her and sends her bed rolling into town on Halloween night. Ages 7-8
"Dragonbreath No Such Thing as Ghosts" by Ursula Vernon: Not only must Danny and Wendell trick-or-treat with skeptical classmate Christiana, school bully Big Eddy dares them to enter a haunted house on Halloween night, where they may have to sacrifice their candy to a ghost. Book 5 in the Dragonbreath series. Ages 8-9
"Pop!" by Dotti Enderle: Malcolm and Dandy get new X-Specs that are supposed to have x-ray vision, but instead seem to hypnotize anyone who looks at them, which comes in handy when they battle some vicious candy they find mixed in with their Halloween treats. Age 8-9
"Sidney & Sidney" by Michele Jakubowski: Sydney, who's a girl, and Sidney, the new boy, are in the same class at school. Mix-ups happen. But they soon find they share some common interests, including a love for Halloween. Ages 6-8
Middle Grade Fiction
"Sammy Keyes and the Night of Skulls" by Wendelin Van Draanen: Junior high detective Sammy Keyes and her friends take a detour through a graveyard on Halloween night and find themselves in the middle of a mystery involving missing people, human skulls, and a ghoulish embalmer, while school presents its own set of tricks and treats. Ages 9-11
"Traps and Specters" by Bryan Chick: On Halloween night, the scouts, along with their Descender allies, must battle terrifying sasquatches at their own elementary school. Fourth book in The Secret Zoo series. Grade 4-6, Age 9-11
