Don and Phyllis will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary at a family dinner with many members coming from out of town. They were married August 17, 1944 in their hometown of Bellingham while Don was on leave from the Army Air Force. They are both retired U.S. Civil Service: she from the Department of Energy; he from U.S. Customs Service. During their time in government service, they lived in El Centro and Calexico, CA; and Portland and Coos Bay, OR. They retired in 1985 and 1986, respectively, in Coos Bay, where Don was Customs Port Director. In 1987, they returned to Bellingham because, "if we still call it home, that must be where we belong." They have three children: Mike (Dianna) of Ferndale, WA; Melinda of Eureka, CA; and Lance (Linda) of Steilacoom, WA. They have six grandchildren (the eldest, Jeremy, deceased) and two great-grandchildren. In 2011, they downsized and moved to a Ferndale retirement park. In October, Don and Phyllis will each have their 89th birthday.
