GET A LITTLE BIT CLOSER
Watch as 16 to 20 teams of four compete in the fourth Fairhaven's Bowler Hat Bocce Ball Tournament from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday on Fairhaven's Village Green.
Players range from students to senior citizens, novices to longtime players, all of them aiming to get the Dirty Dan trophy. The Fairhaven Ladies of the Evening team will compete in costume and Dirty Dan Harris will be on hand to keep them in check.

SADDLE UP FOR THE RODEO
The Lynden Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association showcases bareback riding, barrel racing, steer wrestling, team roping, saddle-bronc riding, tie-down roping and bull riding at 7 p.m. next Friday and Saturday at the Northwest Washington Fair and Events Center, 1775 Front St., in Lynden.

LIFE ON A FERRY BOAT
Award-winning storyteller Jill Johnson performs her one-woman show, "Little, But Oh My!" the story of Berte Olson, the first woman ferry boat captain on Puget Sound, at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Larrabee State Park on Chuckanut Drive.

Get out with naturalists who can explain the world around you during two separate outings this weekend:
"From Forest to Marsh" is a walk down the Terrell Marsh Trail, that begins at 7 p.m. today. Participants will meet in the Wildlife Theater in the upper day use area at Birch Bay State Park on Helweg Road in Birch Bay. This event is free.
"Walk with a Ranger" begins at 1 p.m. on Sunday and is an introductory walk on the Artist Ridge Trail with Justin Paglia, a ranger for the U.S. National Forest Service. Meet near the Artist Point restrooms. The talk is free but participants need a Northwest Forest Pass to park at Artist Point. Cost is $5 for a day pass or $30 for an annual pass. Contact: 599-2714.
WWU FOOTBALL HOLDS SCRIMMAGE
Setting the depth chart will take center stage when the Western Washington University football team holds its first of two fall scrimmages at 4:30 p.m. Saturday. The team is busy getting ready for its Sept. 1 season opener at UC-Davis. Saturday's scrimage at Civic Stadium is open to the public.
