Fans of sailing aren’t usually shy about telling acquaintances the thrill of gliding over open water.

But all that enjoyment can only be fully realized when sailors — and ideally, their passengers — know what they’re doing, in terms of education and safety. There are several local businesses that can provide the training necessary to make the most of a pleasure cruise.

BELLINGHAM YACHT CLUB

The club’s Junior Sailing Program teaches skills primarily to youths 8 to 18. Students have access to an Optimist or Byte Olympic-class sailing dinghy, and vessels are matched to an individual’s skill level. Classes are taught by U.S. Sailing-certified instructors. Classes include a total of 30 hours of course time at the club. Address: 2625 S. Harbor Loop Drive, Bellingham
