This month of May we will be celebrating Bear Awareness Week in Washington state. Part of this awareness exercise is to make the residents of the state aware that our state is not only home to black bears, but also to an endangered small population of grizzly bears in the North Cascades ecosystem. These grizzlies are not only important as icons of the wild, but as “indicator” species identifying the health of our environment.
As in so many situations, humans control the fate of endangered animals. If you support the recovery of these magnificent animals, as I do, advocate for their recovery by contacting public officials and encouraging them to support the protection and recovery of the grizzly population in the North Cascades.
Contact U.S. Sens. Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray and U.S. Reps. Rick Larsen and Norm Dicks and encourage them to act to save this endangered population. Ally yourself with organizations like Whatcom’s own Conservation Northwest or Missoula Montana’s Great Bear Foundation to support their efforts in grizzly recovery.
Truly celebrate Bear Awareness Week by advocating for the survival of grizzlies in Washington state.
