Citizens should resist new growth at airport

The June 20 story “Plans to expand airport raise worries” should have Bellingham residents fighting to protect our quality of life.

Bellingham is making a big mistake sacrificing peace and quiet in its neighborhoods for cheap flights to Las Vegas.

Our neighbors to the south are much smarter about fighting the threat of jets thundering over their homes.

When Allegiant Air recently proposed expanding service to Paine Field, the cities of Mukilteo, Edmonds, Mountlake Terrace and Lynnwood all passed resolutions against it. Mukilteo set aside $250,000 to fight the proposed expansion. Meanwhile, the naive residents of Bellingham roll out the red carpet.

Once the airport facilities are built there is virtually nothing the local residents can do to control the noise from aircraft.

The federal government pays for the facilities and they control the airport. All the local community gets is a few low-paying service jobs at the airport and lots of noise.
