Oil recently hit its all-time high in terms of price per barrel.
Here in Bellingham with gasoline prices over the national and state averages, we feel the effects of this price escalation more than most.
However, rather than looking at the high price of gas as a problem, citizens need to realize that the market for oil and gas is signaling to consumers that a change in consumption patterns must occur.
There has not been a great reduction in driving even with the higher prices. This is understandable since change does not always come quickly.
The lack of short-term change in gas consumption may be worrying.
However, it is the medium to long-term decisions that must change.
The next car purchase, employment-location decisions, production methods, and public transportation projects all need to be decided wisely.
The pricing signal is there. Consumers and producers simply need to respond rationally with government help.
If these long-term decisions are taken wisely, then the price of gasoline would be much less of an issue.
If consumers and producers make smart choices, then their wallets and the environment will thank them.
