Central library should stay in ‘civic core’ area

Many people I’ve talked with are definitely against relocating the main Bellingham library to the waterfront development area; especially near the railroad tracks. The people who expressed their disfavor use the library regularly and are from a large cross section of the community.

Wilson Library on Western Washington University’s campus was expanded without relocation. The Suzzallo library on the University of Washington campus has been expanded several times without relocation. Besides, the main Bellingham library has a 1950s retro architecture that could blend nicely with City Hall and the county buildings.

My concern is by placing everything into the waterfront area we will cause congestion with added infrastructure costs. Too much of a good thing in a confined space may not provide the desired affect we want.

A “civic core” concept has merit. With old Whatcom Museum, the children’s museum, Mount Baker Theatre, the central library with its park, City Hall and the county buildings as the “anchors”, a very pleasant core area is easily obtained.

We would then have a very nice community triangle; the waterfront development, the downtown core and the “civic core.” Spreading out the amenities will provide more community use with less congestion.
